Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are cosmetic dental restorations that cover up the entire front-facing portion of your tooth. They’re thin, tooth-shaped shells that are permanently bonded to the front side of your teeth, where they mask any cosmetic defects and give you a more uniform and flawless smile.

Once in place, your veneers look just like an upgraded version of your teeth, so your smile doesn’t lose its natural appearance. Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments because they provide dramatic results with a quick, easy, and minimally invasive procedure.

What are veneers made from?

There are a couple of different materials that are well-suited for veneers:

Porcelain

The color and clarity of porcelain are incredibly similar to that of your natural tooth enamel, making it an excellent material for natural-looking veneers that blend in seamlessly with your smile. Porcelain is also strong and durable, which significantly extends the life of your veneers.

Composite resin

Composite resin is engineered to look like your tooth enamel, so your veneers will look as beautiful as your natural teeth. Composite resin is slightly more prone to chipping, however, and they typically don’t last as long as porcelain veneers. Composite resin veneers are less expensive than porcelain, though, so you’ll be able to improve the look of your smile at a fraction of the cost.

What cosmetic concerns can veneers improve?

Veneers cover up the entire front of your tooth surface, so they effectively mask any visible cosmetic defect you might have on your teeth, including:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Stains that haven’t responded to professional whitening treatments

Veneers also enable you to redesign the size and shape of your teeth, allowing you to fix:

  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Receding gums

With veneers, you can effectively redesign your teeth to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

What happens when I get veneers?

Your journey towards a more beautiful smile with veneers begins with a consultation at Davis Smile Center. You and Dr. Afkham discuss your ideal smile and pick out the size, shape, and color for your veneers that best compliments your appearance.

Dr. Afkham then shaves a very thin layer of enamel from the front of the teeth that will receive the veneers. The amount of enamel he shaves off is equivalent to the thickness of the veneers themselves, which are less than a millimeter thick.

Once your teeth are prepared, Dr. Afkham takes an impression of your smile that he sends off to a high-quality lab. That lab designs and fabricates your veneers so that they fit perfectly on your teeth and comfortably in your mouth. You wear a set of temporary veneers for a couple of weeks while you wait for your permanent restorations.

When your permanent veneers come back from the lab, Dr. Afkham bonds them to your teeth, ensures they look and feel great, and seals them in place with dental cement. You leave his office with a brand new smile that you’ll be excited to share with the world.
